Where you ask the question is where the answer should be.

Sounds simple and it is (or can be!). It just takes the right mindset and for you to see opportunities as to where this might occur.

At Seating Matters they took this to the next level. Even when you opened up the back of the remote controls for the TV there was a sticker stating the location of the spare batteries! As when you’re looking for spare batteries the answer should be where you ask the question….

This might seem like overkill but here’s why they go to these extremes:

• If you spend 10 minutes trying to find batteries that is waste
• Worse still you could ask someone else where the batteries are and you both waste 10 minutes looking for them
• Or, the person that you ask was actually in the middle of an important task. Not only have you interrupted their flow (so the total disruption may well be more than 10 minutes) but what if they were doing the quality control check on a chair before it gets dispatched and then because they were interrupted a defect gets missed.

All this because of some batteries!

It also makes it a lot easier to set the standard – as if the answer is always provided to everyone then there is no excuse not to follow this!

So the next time you spend 15 minutes looking for something and getting frustrated think to yourself – where should I put the answer to this question? (and can I make it as visual as possible!)
